Editorial Portraiture – Kurt Forman of ‘Clearview Farms’ in Palmyra NY
As a freelance photographer I occasionally get assignments from Rochester City Newspaper that hit home for me. This was one such assignment. I traveled to Palmyra NY to visit Kurt Forman, an organic farmer, that the paper was doing an article on. (click here to read it) It was a beautiful evening and as I pulled up Kurt was getting off his mower. We greeted each other and immediately got to talking. An hour and a half later I was heading back home reminiscing of my own days as a farmer. Being on his farm took me back ten years when I used to farm with a girlfriend of mine on her family farm in Greece NY. Her father and mother had passed away making them very pivotal years for me. Knowing her father and how hard he worked really gave me an appreciation for what he did. Especially after doing it myself after he passed. It’s another reason that I’m so fond of the Rochester Public market. Spending a few years selling our vegetables at 5am really makes you wonder why folks even do it anymore. I’m constantly reminded though when I see “No Farms, No Food” bumper stickers on every other Prius. Meeting Kurt brought that all back. On my way home all I could do is think about how much I admire what he’s doing. I hope people realize the importance of sustainable agriculture and the role it will play for years to come.
Here are some of the images I captured of Kurt and his farm for the article. Most of my images were not published in the article so I really wanted to share them here. They mean a lot to me and I hope you enjoy them as well. Thank you Kurt, and others like you, for everything you do. If I get out to Palmyra again I’ll surely take you up on that beer.

Michael,
What a great set of pics! I remain a big fan of your “style” and I want to find a cool next job to use your talents on. Really nice stuff, since (and most people don’t know this…) I also grew up working most of my young adult life on dairy and truck farms just south of Rochester in the Mendon-Ionia area.
